Old Houseware Items Turned Modern Vases

Better Homes and Gardens has some suggestions for creative flower arrangements. Some of them use items that could be found while looking around antique shops and markets, garage sales, and anywhere else! Or think about other uses for items before you toss them.

Centerpieces Using Hydrangea

As promised here are some pictures of centerpieces that use hydrangea.  Hydrangeas look great all on their own or combined with any number of flowers - roses, lilies, peonies, and hanging amaranthus, just to name a few.

Spring Centerpieces - Tutorial

Epicurious posted a slideshow with tips on how to make three different spring centerpieces.  Click here for the slideshow.  If you look closely you can see the asparagus lining the square vase for the arrangement at the farthest right.

Easter Centerpieces

Here are a few more centerpiece ideas for your Easter table. I love the use of the wheat grass in the middle left picture - it is so simple! And again, we see the blown out egg as a vase in the bottom left picture. Click on each of the pictures for more details about each of the arrangement.

A Bright and Cheerful Event

On Monday, we showed you one of Jane Packer's floral arrangements. She is tops when it comes to floral designers. Packer has a few schools dedicated to teaching floral design, has authored numerous books about flowers, and has designed the florals for some famous weddings. Brides Magazine featured an event with some of her floral designs (she partnered with Donna Stain, for this). I love the gift boxes and the flower garland for the escort cards. It is all really cute!

Although these floral arrangements were created for a wedding reception, the ideas, especially the gift box idea, could be used for any number of occasions, including birthdays, baby showers, and bridal showers.

Governors Ball - Roses, Roses, Roses

With the Academy Awards Presentation on Sunday, Hollywood is busy preparing for the all the parties.  One of the biggest parties following the Oscar Ceremony is the Governors Ball.  This year, the color theme is red with gold accents as a tribute to the Oscars' 80th anniversary: think red carpet, gold statues.  Some 15,000 roses will be used in the arrangements!  James Storie orchids will add the splash of gold to compliment the red.  The overall look is stunning!

YumSugar was lucky enough to check out the preview of the event and posted some wonderful pictures of the flower arrangements.  Click here for more details and more pictures.   At the end of YumSugar's post, you can watch a short video clip from the "flower guy" Mark Held of Mark's Garden.  Here is a preview:

On another note - Pink Martini, a 12-member pop orchestra group from Portland, Oregon, will headline the entertainment at the Ball.  I saw them in concert last year and really enjoyed their fun, eclectic, and worldly music.  The lead singer sings beautifully in at least 4 different languages.

Enjoy the Oscars!

Classic Red Flowers for Your Wedding

The color red immediately reminds us of love. It is a bold color for the passionate. Here are some popular red flowers: roses, peonies, amaryllis, dahlias, tulips, carnations, and gerbera daisies. For some inspiration for using a red flower color theme, check the pictures below.

You can use a number of different color combinations with red. Some of the more modern combinations are red and teal, red and orange, and red and magenta. For more classic combinations, try red and black, red and white, red and brown, red and jade green, and red with a touch of gold. Don't feel limited to just those suggestions, though. There are so many combinations you can use with red!
